Un-block that writer’s block: We ‘sing’ through it

Hi everyone!

It’s been a while (well, a couple of weeks) since my last post, and I’ve been trying to get over some sort of a hump. There are two types of people when it comes to writer’s block: those who believe in it and those who don’t. I fall under those who do, and I’m in one right now.

Okay, granted that I’ve been busy as hell and the only thing I’ve managed to churn out in months was that edited preview of Gezellig 3, Curtain Call (which you can still access here) and then nothing else. So to solve it (and to gear up for a couple of stories I’ve got lined up), I came up with this strategy: write some one-shots. Of course, I need to get inspiration somewhere else, and I turn to music.

THE BRILLIANT IDEA (which could backfire on me, haha): Why not write one-shots based on songs, and release one weekly?

So I asked for suggestions on songs for inspiration both on Twitter and on Facebook, and I got the following so far:

  • Don’t Give Up on Me by Milo Greene [from Kristel — I am so curious about this song because I’ve seen her tweet about this]
  • Anaconda by Nicki Minaj [from Chrissie! This is interesting and quite challenging haha]
  • Over You by Ingrid Michaelson feat. A Great Big World [from Pearl. But this one is already used in (un)breakable, so sorry!]
  • Still Into You by Paramore [from Luna. I have to say aside from Proof, this is one of my most favorite tracks off their new album]
  • A Higher Place by Adam Levine, off the Begin Again OST [from my buddy Ico! I adore this movie and the soundtrack!]
  • Boom Clap by Charli XCX from The Fault in Our Stars OST [again from my buddy Ico… the movie OST also is <3]
  • Rather Be by Clean Bandit [I have to acquaint myself with this one, also from Ico]
  • Girls Chase Boys by Ingrid Michaelson [from Ico! Ingrid’s getting a lot of requests]
  • Close as Strangers by 5 Seconds of Summer [from Dinah. I told her this one is on Gezellig 3 playlist, so I won’t touch it yet.]

That’s what I have so far, enough to occupy me for about two months? I’m still open to song suggestions so hit me up! :D

Best,

Kesh xx

The Real Score Blog Tour: THANK YOU and… another Gezellig song teaser?

Hello everyone!

It’s been a great week for my novella, The Real Score because of its blog tour and I had loads of fun! First off, thanks to Dia of Book Junkie Joint for organizing this, and to all the bloggers who participated. Heaps of gratitude as well to all those who joined the raffle giveaway! I’m thinking of coming up with something on my own, so stay tuned!

Below are the stops my book made during its blog tour:

Feeling excited too for the winner of the giveaway! Hope you’re ready for some sugar rush! *wink*

Since I’m in this weird cloud 9 for all the love The Real Score has been getting, here’s another Gezellig song teaser for you all: Continue reading

I figured it out.

I figured it out.
That I shouldn’t have asked or
looked for signs
as sometimes we’re not really
meant to see them
so we could feel we earned it
instead of relying on serendipity.

I figured it out.
That promises are
meant to be kept sacred
and not forgotten like
that little dark secret you keep.
Promises are not just little white lies
you throw around to save you.

I figured it out.
That those three words–
I am sorry, I miss you, I forgive you, I love you–
are meant to be said aloud
because we need to hear it.
Because things are subject to different interpretations
and yours is always different from mine.

So I scream and shout
and yell and chase you
to tell you these things.
Coz I figured it out
why we didn’t work out
but you’ve figured it out
that it wasn’t worth it anymore.

Cover Love: The Real Score

My novella is out!

Yes, I know, you’re tired of hearing this. You’re also tired of reading this on my Twitter and on this blog, but I am not going to stop talking about it. So gear up, because you’re going to read more about it.

Getting this novella out wouldn’t be possible if not for a group of people, and one of these is my cover artist, Aaron. To be honest, the reason why I stalled on getting this novella published was because I don’t have an editor and a cover artist. I wrote The End on TRS by the end of April, but I don’t have any idea where to find those two important people to move the publishing along.

And then bam! I found my editor. Now where to source for a cover artist?

I know of batchmates who draw and are fantastic artists. I follow a Tumblr blog with gorgeous drawings, one that I have contacted before, but I am still coming up empty. And then one day, while reading through my Twitter timeline, I spot a post of a drawing.

And I liked that drawing.

I had my eureka moment, and I contacted Aaron. Lucky for me, he was up for it—it was his first plunge into making covers, so each step was new for both of us.

I emailed him the basic specifications of the cover, and then a “brief” of what the story is about, the characters, and what I envision about the cover. There was some back and forth on the items, especially on the details about the characters, but Aaron asked me on integral question: what are the specific settings in the book for the characters? I gave him two or three, and I was really leaning towards the last one, but he was right in that it spoils the ending if that was the one on the cover.

So I told him to surprise me of his idea for the cover. Continue reading

The Real Score: Out now at Amazon Kindle Store

I know, I know–I’ve been absent for so long! I miss blogging (or badgering you with my ramblings, whichever way you want to call it, haha). As stated in previous posts, I’ve been working on getting published (traditionally, digitally, or whatever).

And guess what?

I DID IT.

I legit did it. :)

You can get my novella, the first (hopefully) of the Gezellig series, The Real Score at Amazon Kindle Store. I’m still working on the Smashwords edition, and later on there’ll be a paperback (doing pre-orders for this soon, yay!).

In the meantime, hope you can grab a copy of the story I’ve been working since January.

BONUS: If you’re like me who likes playlists, then check out the The Real Score playlist on 8tracks. Because music + books are fun.

YIPEE :)

.xx, Kessica (Well, I think I’d have to start signing this as Kesh from now on, HAHA)

Everything, all at once.

It takes a holiday to take some time off to write. Honestly, this blog’s a bit… sad now that I’m not posting stories here anymore, but I do like the freedom that WordPress gives me in terms of formatting my stories. :(

Anyway, let’s kick this off, shall we?

Ripped Off. Those who have read my stories from the start, particularly Solace, will be familiar with this one. I have mentioned it a bunch of times there, referencing it as one of JJ’s best-selling novels. But Ripped Off is a real novel, something that I’ve got sitting in my laptop for a long time (like since 2011 long), written close to 70 pages of it, and parked it because I got stuck with the plot. Now I’m trying to revive it, as part of the writing goals that I told Ms. Mina. :) I’m revisiting the chapters I’ve written, smoothing out details, and posting them slowly. Please don’t forget to check out my Figment and Wattpad pages for it :)

Anti-bullying. If I had so much money, one of the movements that I will support will be this one. I don’t know if people realize how much being bullied changes people’s lives. To quote Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why:

You don’t know what goes on in anyone’s life but your own. And when you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can’t be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person’s life, you’re messing with their entire life. Everything… affects everything.

Recently, 1D came out with a PSA, urging everyone to Live kind, love everyone, and move together against bullying. To be true, celebrate being original, courageous and unique, confident and successful. CHOOSE TO LIVE NICE. PSA below:

There is one comment that struck me though: the one by Bellasmee97: “Me: *buys 1D against bullying notebook* Me:*gets bullied for having a 1D notebook against bullying*”

Sadly, likely to happen :(

Music! I am late to the party with Imagine Dragons, but I’m enjoying their music so much. Like this:

And while we’re at this, can we discuss Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran’s music video for Everything Has Changed? TOO MUCH CUTENESS, I can’t even.

John Green. I am recently getting frustrated about not being read as much as I wanted to, but it only takes a little John Green to remind me why I do what I do.

That’s it… I think.
